Weekly News

Important Information
*Check out the new photos and videos on our class blog!
*On Wednesday, January 30th, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school!  Children are encouraged to dress like they are 100 years old.  For example, I am sprinkling powder in my hair so it looks gray and putting it in a bun, borrowing my grandma’s cane, and wearing a very dated dress.  Be creative and have fun!!
*Several parents have voiced concern over rapidly diminishing lunch accounts, so I just wanted to remind you that children are allowed to buy whatever they want unless you have sent in the form (or a handwritten note) with your restrictions.    The children often have eyes bigger than their stomachs and are selecting extra snacks and even double entrees.  Please make sure your child knows your expectations for lunch choices and whether or not you allow extra snacks/entrees.  Thanks for your help with this!
*You may notice that your child is bringing home his/her book from reading group more than one day.  Now that we are getting into higher level books, we are spending more time reading and responding to them.  Please do not allow your child to read further than we read in group…it’s really important that we are all on the same page when we meet, discuss, and experience the text.

Important Dates
January 21st – No school
January 30th – Early Release; 100th Day!

What are we learning?
Word Work
This is week 16 on Spelling City.  Our new 1st grade word wall words are: try, best, ten.  We are reviewing these kindergarten words:  what, when, get.  We are also studying long i (spelled ie, -y, and igh/ight).
Reading and Writing
We are in the midst of our electricity unit.  This week, we will continue to learn about different kinds of circuits including simple, series, parallel, open, and closed.  We will also learn about Ben Franklin.
We are working on decomposing numbers to various ways to create the same sum (i.e. 3+2 = 1+4).  We will also start exploring strategies for solving subtraction problems including counting up and back.
