Weekly News

* Check out the new photos on our class blog!  www.mrsandersonshuskies.blogspot.com
*The start of the school year is always a very busy time for families...especially those with more than one child in school.   If for any reason, you are unable to attend Parent Orientation on Thursday night at 7pm, I am happy to send home all information from the session. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
*Please make sure to check your child’s take-home folder every night and discuss what we are working on in school.  You may keep the completed work that comes home.  Promptly return any paperwork. Also make sure to read and sign your child’s planner nightly.
*Be sure to send a healthy snack and bottle of water each day for snack time.
*Classroom wish list:
-Barbie clothes for recess
-refill glue sticks for glue gun
-4 navy blue pillows or kitchen chair cushions
-old iPhones
*We are in need of one more parent volunteer for reading groups.  The volunteer will meet with a small group of children every Friday from 10:45-11:15am starting in September.  Are you interested and available?

What are we learning?
Word Work
Our words of the week are must, four, about.  We are also reviewing short vowel word families.
Writing
We are learning about the mechanics of writing including capital letters (beginning of each sentence, the word I, and for special names) and punctuation (ending marks including .?!).  We will also explore nouns (common and proper – as well as making sure all of our sentences contain a noun).
Math
We are continuing unit 1 (How do mathematicians communicate their mathematical ideas?).  This week, we are learning about graphs.  We will practice gathering data, creating various types of graphs, and interpreting data.  We will also study time to the hour and half hour.
Reading
In reading, we will learn about taking care of books, returning books to our classroom library, choose books to read, and making sure the books we choose are a good fit for us.  We will also go to the school library for library orientation with Mrs. Clark.  Did you know that 1st graders get to check out 2 books!?!  After orientation, our class will visit the library for class check-out every Friday.
Social Studies
This week, we will continue to build community in our classroom by learning about our classroom jobs, establishing important rules for our class, and determining ways we can build friendships and be good friends to each other.
