What are we learning?
Word Work
Our new 1st grade word wall words are: end, mother, thing, jump. We are reviewing these kindergarten words: where, down, he. This is week 25 on Spelling City. We are also studying the final K sound (spelled –ck, -k, and –ke).
Writing and Reading
We are continuing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. While reading this classic, we will work on creating mental images. Did you know that creating mental images is a thinking strategy that good readers use to help them deepen their understanding of the text?
I am currently in the midst of winter reading assessments so I am not meeting with groups at this time – instead I am meeting with individuals to see how their reading is progressing in terms of our formal reading assessment (DRA). You may notice that your child isn’t bringing home as many reading group books while these assessments are being administered.
Science
We are continuing our study of the three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases). This week, we will move onto the 3 forms of water and the water cycle.
Math
We will continue our study of numbers. We will work on skip counting by 10s and explore place value (ones, tens, and hundreds).
